Zinger Classic Day 1 matchup with NMJC and Pima

The Geckos fell behind early and couldn't come back in a 14-4 loss to New Mexico JC on Friday.  New Mexico JC took the lead on a home run in the first inning. New Mexico JC got things moving in the first inning.  S Tucker homered on a 1-1 count, scoring two runs. K Benavidez led things off on the hill for New Mexico JC. The hurler allowed three hits and four runs over three and a third innings, striking out four and walking one. Isaac Rehfield toed the rubber for GW. The lefthander went three and two-thirds innings, allowing seven runs on eight hits, striking out five and walking one.  Luke Legumina threw one-third of an inning in relief out of the bullpen. The Geckos smacked two home runs on the day. Treston Shallenberger went yard in the first inning. Dylan Fesperman put one out in the fourth inning. Fesperman, Shallenberger, and Braedon Stoakes each collected one hit to lead GateWay. New Mexico JC collected eight hits.  L Morresi, Tucker, and R Griss each collected multiple hits for New Mexico JC.


The Geckos had trouble keeping up with Pima Community College  Aztecs Varsity in a 9-3 loss on Friday. GateWay got things started in the first inning.  Braedon Stoakes scored on a wild pitch to take the early 1-0 lead. In the top of the third inning, Pima Community College Aztecs tied things up at one.  Gage Mestes singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run. Pima Community College pulled away for good with two runs in the fourth inning.  In the fourth Emilio Corona tripled on a 1-0 count, scoring one run and Preston Clifford grounded out, scoring one run. Pima scored five runs in the ninth inning.  The offensive firepower by Pima Community College was led by Trent Kiraly, A Stucky,  Braedon Mondeau, and Corona, all driving in runs in the inning. Jaren Jackson led things off on the pitcher's mound for Pima Community College. The lefthander lasted six innings, allowing four hits and one run while striking out seven and walking zero. Cade Nelson started the game for the Geckos. The pitcher went four innings, allowing three runs on three hits and striking out five.  Michael Riley and Zach Martinez entered the game from the bullpen, throwing three innings and two innings respectively. GateWay scattered eight hits in the game.  Braedon Stoakes, Treston Shallenberger, and Ty Mead each collected multiple hits for the Geckos.  Mead, Shallenberger, and Stoakes each managed two hits to lead GW.  The Geckos stole four bases during the game as two players stole more than one. Stoakes led the way with two. Pima Community College racked up 11 hits in the game.
