Baseball Sweeps Mesa to Finish Conference Play with a 7 Game Winning Streak!

Game 1: GateWay Crushes Mesa Behind Home Run Barrage

The GateWay baseball team pounded their way to a convincing 9-4 victory over Mesa on Tuesday. An offensive attack that featured three home runs propelled GateWay to their win. The Geckos bats were hot all afternoon, racking up 15 hits, including three home runs. Jeter Mauzey led the way going 3-for-5 with a double and a run, while William Mann, Macs Carillo, and Andrew Hunt all went deep for the Geckos. Nolan Kutcher and Raenan Padilla each got 2 hits apiece and scored 1 run each. Treston Shallenberger had a productive day at the plate as well, reaching base three times with a hit, 2 walks, and three stolen bases.

Andres Gonzalez was the workhorse on the mound for the Geckos, tossing six strong innings and allowing just three runs (zero earned) on three hits. He struck out six batters while walking five. Matthew DAmato and Alex Hernandez came on in relief and combined to allow just one hit an one run over the final three innings. GateWay did commit three errors in the game, but they were able to overcome them thanks to their strong offensive performance.

 

Game 2: GateWay Crushes Mesa 15-11 in High-Scoring Affair

GateWay overwhelmed Mesa in a slugfest on Wednesday afternoon, outscoring them 15-11. Both teams combined for 31 hits, with the Geckos racking up 14 runs batted in compared to Mesa's 11. The GateWay offense was on fire throughout the game. Jeff Martz led the way, going 4-for-6 with 3 runs scored, 4 RBIs, and a double. Jeter Mauzey also had a big night, collecting 3 hits (including 2 doubles) and driving in a run with 2 runs scored. The rest of the lineup chipped in as well, with 6 other players recording at least one hit and one RBI. Kevynn Fernandez went 3-for-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI. Nolan Kutcher went 2-for-4 with 3 runs and 2 RBIs. William Mann went 1-for-5 with a bases clearing triple to earn 3 RBIs and one run. Macs Carrillo had one hit on the afternoon, scoring 2 runs and batting 2 runs in. Andrew Hunt was 2-for-3 with a double, 2 runs and and RBI. Last but not least Roy Carrasco had 1 hit, 1 run and 1 RBI and Treston Shallenberger scored 2 runs. The Geckos were also active on base with Shallenberger, Martz, Mauzey, Kutcher, Fernandez, Carrasco and Hunt all stealing a base. 

GateWay came out strong scoring four runs in the 1st inning. Mesa fought valiantly, scoring seven runs in the top of the 4th inning, GateWay answered back with one run in the bottom of the 4th to reduce the game 5-7. Mesa responded with two more runs in the top of the 5th, but the Geckos had an offensive outburst in the bottom of the 5th, scoring nine runs. Mesa could only answer back with one more run in the 6th and another in the 9th. 

While the offenses were hot, pitching was a different story. Both starting pitchers failed to go deep into the game. Wyatt Bauer came in relief for GateWay and earned the win, pitching 3.⅔ innings and allowing only 1 run on 4 hits. The game was also marred by a high number of errors, with both teams committing a combined 9 miscues.
