GateWay Geckos Women's Soccer Defeat South Mountain in Conferance Opener!

The Gateway Geckos defeated the South Mountain Cougars 4-1 in a dominant performance. After a tight first half with zero goals scored for both teams, the Geckos opened the scoring in the 49th minute of the game when Alexis Hicks scored off an assist from Olivia Waterhouse. Kenna Cassey then scored two goals in succession, in the 53rd and 65th minutes, to give the Geckos a 3-0 lead. Cassey was assisted by Waterhouse and Devony Navarro. Esperanza Reyes added a goal off a corner kick by Hicks to make it 4-0.

The Cougars got on the board late when Lucy Millan scored, but it was too little too late. The Geckos controlled the rest of the game and cruised to victory.

Here are some of the key players for the Geckos:

  • Alexis Hicks: Hicks scored one goal and had an assist.
  • Kenna Cassey: Cassey scored two goals and was a dominant force up top. She won possession of the ball numerous times and created several scoring opportunities for her teammates.
  • Olivia Waterhouse: Waterhouse had two assists and was a creative force in the Geckos' attack.

The Geckos' goalkeeper, Josephine Cisneros, also had a strong game. She made five saves to keep the Cougars at bay.

The Lady Geckos are back in action on Tuesday, September 5th for their home opener against the reigning NJCAA DII National Champions, Phoenix College. Kick off is at 5pm at Dobson High School.
