A Tale of Two Pitchers: Gateway Edges Madison in Low-Scoring Affair

In a pitcher's duel that went down to the wire, Gateway squeaked by Madison 2-0 on Wednesday. Both starting pitchers, Andres Gonzalez for Gateway and Michael Carpenter for Madison, were dominant, combining for 16 strikeouts and allowing only one run on 10 hits. Gateway got on the board in the fifth inning when Andrew Hunt led off with a single and then scored on a hard ground ball hit by Treston Shallenberger causing the second baseman for Madison to make an error on the play. The Geckos would score again in the sixth inning with a string of productive at bats. Macs Carrillo drew a walk to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a wild pitch. That was followed by a fly out by James Warren to move Carrillo to third base and Will Mann hit a sac fly to right to bring him home. Despite getting several hits Madison College was unable to push any runs across. They stranded seven baserunners.

Andres Gonzalez earned the win for Gateway, going six strong innings and striking out ten batters. He allowed just three hits and no runs. Matthew D'Amato came on to pitch a scoreless seventh for his first save of the season. (This game was agreed to be seven innings prior to the start of the game)

ACU JV Falls to GateWay

ACU JV's baseball team fell to GateWay by a score of 7-2 in a game that saw a lot of offense. ACU JV got off to a slow start, only managing one run in the top of the third inning. They struggled to find consistency at the plate, with only two batters recording multiple hits. The team also committed five errors, which proved costly in the close game.

The Geckos took advantage of ACU JV's mistakes, scoring one run in the second inning, two runs in the third inning and four runs in the fifth inning. Jeter Mauzey had a big day for GateWay going 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs, an RBI, and a stolen base in addition to reaching on an error. Jeff Martz also contributed for the Geckos, going 1-for-3 with a double, a run, and an RBI. Braden Watkins had a productive day, collecting three RBI on a 1-for-3 performance that included a double and a stolen base. Andrew Hunt also went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, Matthew D'Amato went 1-4 scoreing a run, and Treston Shallenberger went 1-for-4 with two runs, and two stolen bases.

Parker Moore started on the mound for the Geckos in his first start since injury last year. Moore pitched one inning allowing one hit and no runs. Hunter Cowgill came on in relief and pitched two scoreless innings, striking out one and allowing no hits. Kole Rubenking entered the eighth inning and despite some troubles early on Rubenking got out of a bases loaded no out jam with only allowing one run thanks to a stellar double play tuned in by Raenan PadillaZac Wroble closed the game out for the Geckos pitching one inning and striking out two batters.
