Late Home Runs Secure a Win Over Cochise College

GateWay Community College rallied from a late deficit to defeat Cochise College by a score solo homeruns in the 9th and 10th inning by Treston Shallenberger and William Mann to secure a 7-6 victory in a thrilling ball game on Saturday afternoon in Douglas, AZ. 

Gateway's offense was led by a balanced attack with six different players recording hits. Treston Shallenberger had a huge day at the plate, going 2-for-5 with a double, a home run, and 2 RBI. William Mann also contributed significantly, collecting 2 hits, 2 RBI, and a home run. Jeter Mauzey and Andrew Hunt both went 2-for-4 scoring one run each and Hunt also had a stolen base bring his season total to 17 stolen bases. Raenan Padilla chipped in with 2 RBIs and Macs Carrillo had an RBI double. Overall, Gateway was able to string together timely hits throughout the game to keep the pressure on Cochise's pitching staff.

Despite surrendering 12 hits, Gateway's pitching staff was able to grind out a victory. Starter Logan Martin pitched a solid 6 innings, allowing only 1 earned run while striking out 5 batters. The closer came in and shut the door in the later innings, with Matthew D'Amato earning the win after tossing 3.2 scoreless innings and striking out 4. 

Cochise College put up a valiant effort, outhitting Gateway 12-11. They took the lead in the seventh inning scoring 6 runs, but couldnt pull out the victory after late homers by the Geckos.

  • Treston Shallenberger's solo home run in the top of the 9th inning tied the game at 6-6.
  • William Mann's solo home run in the top of the 10th inning gave Gateway a 7-6 lead.
  • Cochise College rallied for 6 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning but ultimately fell short.
