Game 1 vs Mesa, Tuesday 2/27:

Mesa Edges Out GateWay in High Scoring Affair (11-9)

Game Summary:

Mesa pulled off a close victory over GateWay in a game filled with offensive production and defensive miscues. Mesa outhit GateWay by a slim margin (13-12), but capitalized on key errors (3-2) to secure the win.

Offensive Highlights:

Pitching Breakdown:

  • Alex Hernandez: Provided crucial relief for GW 24, tossing 3.33 innings and allowing only 2 runs on 1 hit while striking out 5.
  • Wyatt Bauer: Also pitching in relief went 2 scoreless innings

Key Plays:

  • GateWay scored first with 3 runs in the 1st inning, Mesa answered back with 2 runs in the 2nd and 4 in the 3rd. GateWay replied again with 5 runs in the 5th, but Mesa responded with 2 runs in the 6th. Both teams scored 1 run a piece in the 9th to tie the game up, but GateWay couldnt respond to Mesa's 2 runs in the 10th. 

Overall:

This game was a display of offensive firepower and defensive blunders. While GateWay threatened throughout, Mesa's timely hitting and ability to capitalize on errors ultimately secured the victory.

 

Game 2 vs Mesa, Wednesday 2/28: 

GateWay Battles to Take Down Mesa 7-4

In a close contest, GateWay edged out Mesa by a score of 7-4 on Wednesday. The game featured strong pitching performances by GateWay and a midgame surge to secure the victory.

Offensive Highlights:

  • Jeter Mauzey led the way for the Geckos, going 2-for-3 with a grand slam to bring in 4 runs.
  • Treston Shallenberger and Andrew Hunt also added home runs for GateWay, with each contributing with a stolen base, 2 hits and a combined 3 RBIs.
  • Jeffery Martz went 2-for-4 for the Geckos scoring 1 run
  • Kevynn Fernandez also scored a run for GateWay going 1-for-3 at the plate

Pitching Breakdown:

  • Gus Rogers earned the win for GateWay, pitching 6 innings and allowing 3 runs on 6 hits. Mat Mayer came in relief and pitched 3 innings to secure the save.

Key Moments:

  • Gateway scored 5 runs in the 5th, 1 in the 7th and 1 in the 9th to secure the win. 

Overall:

This was a well-played game by both teams. GW's offense came alive in the middle of the game, while their pitching staff held Mesa in check. 

 

Game 3 vs. ACU-JV, Thursday 2/29:

ACU-JV Falls to GateWay in a Non-Conference Game (6-1)

ACU JV's baseball team suffered a tough loss on the road against GateWay, falling by a score of 6-1. The game started as a pitcher's duel, with neither team able to score in the first 2 innings. The game broke open in the bottom of the 3rd inning when the Geckos plated 2 runs followed by a 3rd run in the 4th inning. GateWay went on to score 1 run in the 7th inning and 2 runs in th 8th inning to secure their victory. 

Key Performers:

  • Alex Hernandez led the way offensively for GateWay going 3-for-4 on the day with 1 double, 1 run and 1 RBI. 
  • Jeffery Martz also contrinuted going 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI
  • Braden Watkins led the Geckos in stolen bases with 3 and also scored a run scored and had an RBI.
  • Dom Alvardo also contributed on the bases with 2 stolen bases and 1 run
  • Luke Emerson and Will Langdon each secured 1 RBI a piece and Emerson also scored 1 run
  • Aaron Bazan went 1-for-2 on the day with 1 run and 1 stolen base and Macs Carrillo also scored 1 run
  • Dom Giustino picked up the win on the mound, pitching 5 innings and allowing 0 runs while striking out 6.
  • Hunter Cowgill contributed in relief going 2 innings and allowing the only run for ACU-JV of the game
  • Zac Wroble earned the save for GateWay pitching 2 innings and allowing 0 runs while strking out 4

The Geckos are back in action on Tuesday as they face off against Central Arizona College at home. First pitch at 3pm.
