Baseball Wins 3 in a Row Including a Sweep Over Phoenix College!

Thursday, February 22 vs Scottsdale CC

GateWay baseball defeated Scottsdale 11-1 in 8 innings on Thursday. The Geckos scored 3 runs in the 3rd inning and continued to add to their lead with 4 runs in the 4th and 3 runs in the 8th inning. Gateway's offense was led by Jeffrey Martz who went 4-5 with 5 RBIs, and Treston Shallenberger who went 2-4 with 2 runs and 3 RBIs. Also contributing were Andrew Hunt who went 3-5 with 3 runs and 1 RBI, Aaron Bazan who went 1-4 with 2 runs scored, Roy Carrasco who went 2-2 scoring 3 runs, and Raenan Padilla who went 1-4 with 1 run and 1 RBI. 

Matthew D'Amato started on the mound for Gateway and pitched 4 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits while striking out 2 batters. Tyler Smith pitched the final 4 innings and earned the save, allowing no runs on 2 hits while striking out 2 batters.

 

Friday, February 23 vs Phoenix College

Gateway defeated Phoenix College by the score of 9-4 on Friday. The Geckos got off to a strong start, scoring 2 runs in the first inning and 3 in the 3rd followed by some late runs in the 7th and 8th to secure the win. Raenan Padilla and Kevynn Fernandez each drove in two runs for Gateway, while Andrew Hunt and Jeter Mauzey also had RBIs. Padilla went 1-2 with 2 runs and Fernandez went 1-3 with a triple and scored 1 run. Also contributing was Alex Hernandez who went 2-3 with 1 run and 1 RBI, Jeffery Martz who went 2-4 with 2 runs, Braden Watkins who was 1-1 with 1 run and off the bench with a clutch pinch hit double by James Warren who was 1-1 with 2 RBIs. 

Gateway's pitching staff was effective, allowing only 4 runs on 9 hits. Andres Gonzalez earned the win, pitching 6 innings and striking out 5 batters. Dom Giustino pitched 2.2 innings in relief, allowing 1 run on 1 hit. Jeffrey Martz earned the save by getting the final out of the game with the bases loaded and tying run on deck. Phoenix College's pitchers struggled with control, issuing 6 walks. They were unable to generate enough offense to overcome the early deficit.

 

Saturday, February 24 vs Phoenix College

GateWay defeated Phoenix College 5-1 on Saturday. The offense was a team effort with Treston Shallenberger leding the way for GateWay with a 1-for-3 performance at the plate, including 2 RBIs. Jeter Mauzey and William Mann each added a double for GateWay. With Mauzey driving in a run with a double to take the lead in the 8th and Mann scoring 2 runs. Also contributing was Jeffery Martz and Raenan Padilla who scored 1 run each and Kevynn Fernandez who had 1 RBI. 

Braeden Romero pitched a strong game for GateWay, allowing only one run on one hit over eight innings striking out 9 batters. Mat Mayer closed the game out for the Geckos pitching the 9th inning and allowing no hits or runs. 

 

The Geckos are back in action on Tuesday, February 27th as they face off againts Mesa Community College at home. First pitch is at 3pm.
